Droll, Corporal Cartouch teaching Miss Camp-love her manual

exercises, 1780, mezzotint with colour.

Hand-coloured mezzotint. Lettered below the image with the title and 'From an Original Picture Painted by Mr. Collett. // London, Printed for R. Sayer & J. Bennett, Map & Printsellers, no. 53, Fleet Street, as the Act directs, 4th. Jan.y 1780.' Size 37 x 27 cm. From a painting by John Collet entitled "Corporal Cartouche instructing Miss Camplove in her martial exercises." It depicts the famous actress Charlotte Walpole in 1778 learning her role for the play ‘The Camp’. Her teacher is a Third Guards corporal painted in profile. It shows a soldier drilling an attractive young woman, tilting up her chin while she stands shouldering a musket on the right, mimicked by a monkey sitting on a music book and holding a flute, with a dog and a drummer boy, books and a vase on a chest-of-drawers, a picture of a young female archer and another of the 'Camp of Winchester' on the wall behind.
